Vandenburg Heights is an award winning success story resulting from a partnership between HPI, the City of Sun Prairie, and the non-profit Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development (WPHD). The 35-acre former military complex was one of the first bases sold nationally under the Base Realignment and Closures Act. With strong support from the Wisconsin Congressional delegation, HPI and the City negotiated the purchase of the 68 duplex and 42 single-family homes on the base for $3.5 million. WPHD served as the developer and substantially rehabilitated the duplex units for affordable rental housing. The single-family homes were sold in a lottery by the City to first time homebuyers. Work included a large playground and park for the neighborhood. Following completion in 1992, Vandenburg Heights was honored with an Outstanding Property Award by the Wisconsin Community Development Society and an "Orchid" Award from Capital Community Citizens.
