Property Description
Wagon Wheel Apartments officially opened its doors to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 27, 1999. Developed through a partnership between HPI and Burns & Burns of Iowa City, the development offers needed affordable housing for residents' age 55 and older. The 3-story elevatored building features 33 apartments, a community room and kitchen, mail center, laundry rooms on each floor and an enclosed 3-season porch. On-site parking and close proximity to the Fairfield Senior Center are additional amenities that make Wagon Wheel convenient for area seniors. Fairfield is the county seat of Jefferson County in Southeast Iowa.

Wagon Wheel is the first new senior development in over 10 years in the community. In addition to more than $1 million in equity from Alliant Energy Resources, Wagon Wheel was made possible through strong community support. Over $300,000 was provided through the City's tax incremental financing program and Hills Bank provided long term financing under the Federal Home Loan Bank Community Investment Program. Low interest loans were also provided to keep rents affordable through the Iowa Department of Economic Development HOME program and the Iowa Finance Authority's Housing Assistance Fund.

Wagon Wheel Apartments takes its name from the Turney Wagon Company that operated in Fairfield during the late 1870's. The company made high wheel, wooden farm wagons until the 1930's.
